Frequently asked questions

Thank you so much for taking the time to have a look around my website

I understand how hard it can be to choose and commit to a photographer - let alone prepare for a session.

Below are some of those FAQ’s I get a lot. Have a read through and anything else please email me as I am always happy to chat.

Where are you based?

I am based in Southern Tasmania, close to the Hobart CBD but I am up for travelling and exploring all of beautiful Tasmania.

What makes you different?

This is such a hard question and to be honest it’s that I love to capture the real, raw moments that you will want to remember forever. I like to think that I am pretty easy going, fun and always have your best interests at heart. I like to get to know you and I invest a lot of myself into your session, I also talk a lot and make fun of myself.

What’s your style?

I’m a natural light photographer and I prefer to capture lifestyle photos. This means instead of taking photos of you all looking picture-perfect, smiling cheesily at the camera, I will help guide you to be your natural selves and will capture the genuine love, emotion and connection between you and your family. Perfectly posed and forced photos are not what I’m about – capturing the real you in a meaningful way, is what I do.

What should I expect during a session with you?

Expect to have fun. Expect to laugh, cuddle, kiss and play with one another! Forget about telling your kids to behave themselves and cooperate, forget about trying to force them to stay still and look at the camera!  Let them explore, play, jump and be silly – embrace the chaos and the crazy WITH THEM and let’s capture moments that you will look back on that will make you smile, laugh and cry!  During the session, I might guide you into different positions and provide prompts like asking you to cuddle into one another, have a race or move you into spots where the light is the best but I like to follow you around and get the real moments as they unfold - just stay connected and engaged with each other, that is when the magic happens.

Where will the session take place?

The possibilities are honestly endless. I think we live in one of the most beautiful parts of the world. The first thing I suggest is there a special place that has meaning to you? Do you live for summer beach days? Do you love going on bushwalks? Do you have a favourite café that you visit every day for coffees, treats and babyccinos? Do you love spending your days cuddling on the couch and playing in your cozy family home?
If you have some ideas, but want to talk more about a specific location – I’m more than happy to chat more and make some suggestions!

Do you do in-home sessions? How does that work?

In-home sessions are so special. There is something so beautiful about capturing your family in your own cosy and unique space.

For in-home sessions on the day when I arrive, I will have a quick walk through your home to find rooms with the best natural light. Generally, I like to use a couple of spaces; often the master bedroom, living room and sometimes a kid’s bedroom – but this really is dependent on where the light is and what spaces you like too.

Please don’t feel like you need to spend days preparing your home – it is helpful if you can do a bit of de-cluttering in the rooms mentioned as we don’t want anything too distracting in the images but we can talk through all of this beforehand.

What time do your sessions normally take place?

For indoor sessions, the time is pretty flexible. I always like to suggest a morning time as babies/young kids are usually a bit more relaxed and happy in the mornings. But if afternoons work better for you and your family then that’s fine.

Outdoor sessions are a little different. Most people prefer their session during golden hour, which is the time of day just after sunrise or just before sunset - where the light is beautiful, flattering and, well, just pretty magical!  The time of this obviously changes quite a lot depending on the season, and in summer, this can make the start times either really early in the morning or much later in the evening. If you have really little kids I totally understand how off-putting that sounds! I have a 4-year-old and hello witching hour and mucking around their sleep schedule I really want this to be a non stressful experience so I am flexible so just chat to me and we can make what works for you as I am available all day!

What should I wear?

This is by far the question I am asked the most! and my response is always you need to FEEL amazing in whatever you wear, which means you also need to be comfortable.

Saying this there are choices you can make about what to wear that will make your session that little bit extra special to look back on.

Some tips:

  • Neutrals are timeless!

  • Flowy skirts/maxi dresses or simple, classic basics matched with textured overlays (scarfs, kimonos, cardigans) photograph really beautifully.

  • Pretty, pretty please don't wear shirts with big graphics/logos, lettering - or mixing too many different bold patterns

  • It’s always nice if your family can wear complementary colours - but not matchy-matchy!!  Mum’s this is the perfect opportunity for you to pick your outfit first, maybe even treat yourself to something special you have been eyeing off and then coordinate the rest of the family around you.

  • Try to avoid blacks and really dark colours if you're having an in-home family or newborn session OR if you’re having a maternity session (as black can hide your beautiful bump!)

  • For newborns, keep it simple – a plain onesie  (which doesn’t cover their tiny little fingers and toes) paired with a beautiful swaddle or blanket. Oh, and for newborn sessions, always safe to have a couple of back up outfits – for you and bubs – just in-case… I will often strip them down to nappy so no need to stress too much and I have clothing and wraps we can use during the session for bub too.

  • Consider the location where you will be having your photo session when choosing your outfit - eg. shoes and socks for a session at the beach is not going to be overall practical.

What if the weather forecast isn’t looking great and we have an outdoor session booked?

Look we live in Tasmania, so there’s always a chance we’ll get a rainy forecast, no matter if you book your session in winter or summer! If it is raining, we will reschedule your session. If the forecast looks wet, we can chat the day before/morning of and decide the best options. We get four seasons in one day so you just never know.

What happens if one of us is sick?

Sickness happens and we will reschedule if you guys are sick, and we’ll also reschedule if I’m sick.

My kids are rather ‘spirited’ will it be okay?

I’m glad it’s not just mine! Honestly, I understand that most young kids are going to do what they want, let them be wild. Snuggle them in closer, give them cuddles and kisses, just go with it. Please don’t worry about the what ifs - we can have as many snack/drinks/tantrum breaks as your little ones need. But also, the fact that we’re not making your kids stand still and smile at the camera for an hour and aren’t forcing them to do things they don’t want to do, usually means the kids end up having a pretty good time!

Are pets and siblings able to join in?

They sure are! I can’t say they will always co-operate but we can try. Most of the time our four-legged friends are our first babies and they are very much a part of our family.

Do you offer posed newborn sessions? Do you bring props along?

I prefer to think of my newborns as more lifestyle, I don’t ‘pose’ your babies so to speak. I have a bean chair with some wraps and blankets that I will bring along to use and will wrap your baby up but my main focus is on capturing what unfolds naturally in front of me. I am absolutely more than happy to include any special mementos, blankets or toys you have for your little one.

When is the best time to have a newborn session? What else should I know about these sessions?

The best time to book in for a newborn session is during the first 4-12 days. I like to allow 1-2 hours for newborn sessions so we have time for nappy changes/feeding/settling ect. Be prepared to do some extra feeds on the day of your session as a baby with a full tummy is generally more content.

Can you Photoshop me to make me look a few years younger or a couple of kilo’s lighter?

Sorry, but no! I’m all about embracing imperfections and celebrating our bodies as they are. I individually edit each of your photos to correct colour/contrast/exposure. I cannot change hairstyles, remove tan lines, change the colour of your walls or just generally make things appear different than they actually are. I like to keep things as natural as possible.

How long after our session will we receive the photos?

Within 1-2 week I like to have your photos ready for you to view, they are viewed via an online secure website. The images are watermarked and from there you can either select your favourite photos you wish to purchase or upgrade to purchase the entire gallery (please note, I always strive to deliver images within 1-2 weeks, however, during busy periods this may occasionally take a week or so longer)

For weddings, I will provide you with a sneak peak to share with family and friends within a couple of days after your special day. Your online gallery will be ready 2-4 weeks after following your wedding.
